The son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, King Charles Philip Arthur George Mountbatten was born on November 14, 1948. He has three siblings: Anne (born in 1950), Andrew (born in 1960) and Edward (born in 1964).
Educated at home in Buckingham Palace, King Charles later attended Gordonstoun, where his father was once a student. He became the first heir to the British throne to graduate college in 1968. Before tying the knot with Princess Diana in 1981, he dated Camilla Shand (later known as Camilla Parker-Bowles) and Sarah Spencer.
Charles and Diana welcomed two sons: Prince William (born in 1982) and Prince Harry (born in 1984). The couple first showed signs of marital tension in the mid-’80s, though they did not divorce until 1996.
He rekindled his romance with Camilla while separated from Diana in the ’90s, and the two wed in 2005 (eight years after Diana’s death). He currently holds the rank of captain in the Royal Navy and group captain in the Royal Air Force.
Charles inherited the throne on September 8, 2022, upon the queen’s death at age 96. He was officially crowned king of England during his coronation ceremony on May 6, 2023.
